Stop the War Naming the Dead event in Trafalgar Square 7.10.12: soldiers\u2019 families and MPs say bring troops home by Christmas<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This Monday 10th<\/sup> December 2012 – Human Rights Day – peace and human rights activists in the Norwich area will be holding a vigil calling for a ceasefire in Afghanistan and remembering the 2 million Afghans who have died in the last 32 years of war. This event will be part of an initiative from the Afghan Peace Volunteers \u2013 Kabul .<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The current 11-year war has seen tens of thousands of Afghans and hundreds of UK soldiers killed – and continuing to die – in a futile and unjustified<\/strong> <\/span><\/strong>war.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Paddy Ashdown, in the first such statement by a senior British politician, joined Stop the War Coalition and anti-war activists in calling for all British troops<\/strong> <\/strong>to come home immediately. <\/span><\/strong>While the UK government is committed to a timetable of withdrawing most of Britain ‘s 9,000 troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014, Lord Ashdown said the only rational policy was to leave quickly.\u00a0 He warned that the only outcome of staying longer was more deaths for no purpose, highlighting the increasing number of Nato troops being killed by those wearing Afghan army or police uniform.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
