‘SAVE NHS’ DEMO\u00a0GOES AHEAD
\n– DESPITE\u00a0HEALTH MINISTER LAMB’S\u00a0PLEDGE

Despite a pledge by health minister Norman Lamb MP that the Coalition government will ‘rewrite’ NHS competition regulations, a\u00a0protest against NHS privatisation will go\u00a0ahead in the minister’s North Norfolk constituency on Saturday (9 March).<\/span><\/div>\n
A rally\u00a0will take place\u00a0at mid-day\u00a0at the Market Cross in North Walsham.<\/div>\n
Local campaigners say that opposition to government NHS privatisation plans should not diminish in response to Mr Lamb’s promise – and pressure\u00a0should be stepped up. They are urging families to attend with placards and banners.<\/div>\n
Bill Adnams of ‘Keep our NHS Public’ said:<\/strong><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n
‘The protest goes ahead, as the Lib-Dems\u00a0have caved in on NHS privatisation before:\u00a0when the Government called a pause to NHS reform after public protests, <\/span>the Lib-Dems helped the legislation\u00a0through parliament a few months later, with only minor changes. Having now seen Section\u00a075 of the Act’s regulations – which would open most of the NHS to privatisation – we cannot trust that ‘rewriting’ means abandonment of privatisation.<\/div>\n
Andy Cairns, of North Norfolk Against the Cuts,<\/strong> a constituent of Mr Lamb, said:<\/div>\n

‘Norman Lamb had planned to announce next Monday that the government would rewrite the NHS competition rules, but\u00a0the\u00a0pressure of the last two weeks, over Section\u00a075, has rushed\u00a0him into\u00a0earlier damage limitation mode. This shows that public pressure works. However, we can’t be complacent. We need to show Norman Lamb and the government we aren’t going away. The NHS is too precious to be handed to profiteers.’<\/div>\n
The rally will include speakers from the ‘Keep Our\u00a0NHS Public’ (KONP) campaign, North Norfolk Coalition Against the Cuts, health union UNISON,\u00a0Norfolk Coalition Against the Cuts and\u00a0Norfolk Coalition of Disabled People.<\/div>\n
As well as demanding an end to NHS privatisation, speakers will also highlight related\u00a0matters of great concern in Norfolk including plans to cut 500 jobs from mental health services, underperforming ambulance services facing a \u00a350 million cut and the combination of service cuts and welfare reforms which are causing distress\u00a0amongst disabled people and the vulnerable poor.<\/div>\n
