I would like to wish\u00a0you a very Happy Christmas and a bright and healthy New Year. I would also like to tell you about our first talk in 2014 which takes place on Friday 17th January 2014 at 1pm in the Friends Meeting House in Upper Goat Lane, Norwich.<\/span><\/div>\n
This time we have got an unusual and interesting talk : <\/span>Dr Rebecca Tillett and Mr Nick Selby will be talking about “50 Years of Rachel Carson’s ‘Silent Spring'” at 1pm in the Friends Meeting House. Dr Tillett’s research focuses on twentieth and twenty-first century multiethnic American Literature and film with particular emphases on contemporary American writers and upon postcolonial theory. She is particularly interested in the ways in which Native writers use literature as a means by which to engage in otherwise political dialogues with national, local and corporate bodies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Certainly, Rachel Carson’s ground-breaking book “Silent Spring” brought the subject of the detrimental effects of pesticides on the environment – particularly on birds- into the public domain. <\/span>Recently,’ Silent Spring’ was named one of the 25 greatest science books of all time by the editors of ‘Discover Magazine’. But it was not without controversy.<\/span><\/p>\n
