3. NORWICH PSC ANNUAL MEETING
\nTowards the end of this meeting we shall hold a short NPSC meeting to
\nelect officers and committee to help revive the branch in Norwich.<\/p>\n
Every year around 700 Palestinian children, aged between 12 and 17, are
\nabducted and jailed by the Israeli military according to UNICEF. They are
\nusually accused of throwing stones at vehicles of the forces of occupation
\n\u2013 a crime punishable under Israeli military law by up to 20 years in
\nprison.<\/p>\n
Arrests take place during violent night raids when the child is forcibly
\nremoved from the family home, shackled, hooded and taken to a detention
\ncentre. Usually they are strip-searched and appear in military court in
\nleg shackles. Bail is virtually never granted, children may be held on
\nremand for months, and in solitary confinement for weeks. No lawyers or
\nfamily members are present at interrogations, which often include threats
\nof death, sexual threats and physical violence.<\/p>\n
When children eventually appear before the military court practically all
\nhave signed confessions \u2013 in Hebrew, which they don\u2019t understand \u2013 knowing
\nthis is the only way to get an earlier release. The conviction rate is an
\nastonishing 97% and a custodial sentence is imposed in 90% of the cases.
\nThey end up with a criminal record, harming their chances of obtaining
\ntravel and other permits in the future.<\/p>\n
The disruption to education and the long-term psychological effects of
\nthese experiences are devastating.<\/p>\n
