Why Should We Celebrate It?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The reason why people fight wars it very complicated.\u00a0 <\/span>I could go on about it for pages, could write whole volumes.\u00a0 <\/span>I could explain its historical causes,\u00a0 <\/span>psycho-social causes, economic causes, religious justifications.\u00a0 <\/span>On the other hand the reason why people fight wars is very simple.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s because people think it\u2019s all right to do so.\u00a0 <\/span>Retaliation that would never be accepted between individuals is somehow thought\u00a0 <\/span>appropriate for nations.\u00a0 <\/span>So if we\u2019re ever going to have peace on earth, we need some simple, straightforward thinking.\u00a0 <\/span>We need simply to notice that wars never do any longterm good and that it\u2019s time to try another way.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fortunately, a straightforward thinker came along a decade ago.\u00a0 <\/span>Jeremy Gilley, a young freelance cinematographer, was making a film about peace, when he realized that, in all human history, there had not been one single day when people somewhere had not been killing each other.\u00a0 <\/span>Why?\u00a0 <\/span>Why was there never even one war-free day?\u00a0 <\/span>Maybe, he reasoned, the place to start was with one day of peace.\u00a0 <\/span>If people got used to just one day a year, perhaps then they could handle two.\u00a0 <\/span>And so on, until one day, there would simply be peace.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeremy\u2019s simple idea caught the imaginations of the great and the good.\u00a0 <\/span>The Dalai\u00a0 <\/span>Lama supported his campaign and the Secretary General of the United Nations.\u00a0 <\/span>Angelina Jolie and Jude Law gave their famous faces to publicize it.\u00a0 <\/span>Finally, in 2001 the United Nations declared September 21st<\/sup> each year as its Peace One Day.\u00a0 <\/span>And never was a day of peace needed more than in that September of 9\/11 terror.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It had taken a long time for the idea to catch on because people \u2013even the media \u2013 are apt to think peace is boring: that it\u2019s just the quiet bit after the shooting and bombing stop.\u00a0 <\/span>Peace is much more than that, as the Peace One Day campaign has shown.\u00a0 <\/span>On Peace Day, 2007, tenth anniversary of the launch of Jeremy\u2019s campaign, a daylong ceasefire was declared in Afghanistan, allowing the vaccination of children against polio in otherwise inaccessible regions of that war-torn country.\u00a0 <\/span>That same day, sixty tons of food were dropped to famine areas of the Sudan, and mosquito nets distributed to sixty thousand people in the Congo.\u00a0 <\/span>Here in Britain, six thousand filled the Albert Hall to celebrate Peace One Day\u2019s birthday and hear Annie Lennox sing \u201cSweet Dreams Are Made of This\u201d, for so they are.\u00a0 <\/span>Learn more at <\/span>www.peaceoneday.org<\/span><\/a> .<\/span><\/p>\n

The campaign continues with work like this throughout the year and with a special focus on September 21st<\/sup>.\u00a0 <\/span>Here in Norwich, we\u2019ve been marking Peace One Day since 2006: sometimes with children and balloons, sometimes in more reflective ways.\u00a0 <\/span>Again this year, a lunchtime vigil will take place in Hay Hill between 1 and 1.30pm on Tuesday, September 21st.\u00a0 <\/span>Norwich Interfaith Link is the sponsor.\u00a0 <\/span>Please join us to make your heartfelt wish that the world may be at peace one day.<\/span><\/p>\n
