UNA Lunch Box talk

Posted on | June 4, 2012 | No Comments

Dear All,

This is a reminder about the important UNA LunchBox talk to be given by Professor Rhys Jenkins on Friday 15th June at 1pm in the Friends Meeting House, Upper Goat Lane, Norwich.  The talk is entitled: “The Rise of China and the Global Economy”. Professor Jenkins is an economist by training with interests in international development issues, particularly trade and foreign investment, and in industrialisation.  His current research  focuses on the impact of the growth of China on other developing countries.  He has had a long term interest in  the activities of transnational corporations in the South and this has included analysis of corporate social responsibility.

Professor Jenkins has over 30 years experience of research in developing countries, particularly in Latin America. He has also worked in East Asia and South Africa. He has acted as a consultant for a number of international bodies including the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD).  His published books include: Transnational Corporations and Uneven Development and Corporate Responsibility and Labour Rights.

This should be an enlightening talk on a subject that affects us all: – the global economy.  Do please try and come.

Hope to see you there, with best wishes,

Marguerite Finn Vice Chair UNA Norwich & District Branch

100 Days of Peace

David Roberts remembered

Posted on | May 11, 2012 | No Comments

All people who knew him will have been very sad to hear the news that David Roberts passed away in care on Thursday evening 10th May

He has served this city and beyond for many years not only as Co-founder of Norwich Interfaith Link and Secretary of Norwich United Nations Association Branch but in many other capacities as well including being a founder member of NPC&PC

He may have left this world but the causes of peace, justice and better understanding which he strove for will continue and the work he put into these will live on too

NIFL’s Chair, Bishop David Gillett, writes:

“All of us involved with Norwich Interfaith Link are saddened to hear of the death of David Roberts, for so many years the inspiration and organiser of the interfaith movement in this part of the world.  His commitment to peace and his never ending desire to cross boundaries and make relationships with those from other backgrounds, ethnicities and religious traditions has left a legacy which many will long remember. At our next meeting we will be holding a two minute silent commemoration of David to mark the passing of one who for so long stood for values to which we all aspire.”

His funeral will be on Friday 18th May with a service at United Reformed Church Princes Street

The Spirit Level – Why Equality is Better for Everyone

Posted on | May 7, 2012 | No Comments

This is a reminder of a stimulating ‘LunchBox’ talk to be given by Mrs Sheila Triggs on Friday 18th May in the Friends Meeting House in Upper Goat Lane, Norwich.  The talk will commence at 1pm and will continue for 30 minutes, followed by questions.
Sheila Triggs will give an appraisal and talk about the best selling book: The Spirit Level – Why Equality is Better for Everyone;
Sheila is a past President of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom and a member of its current national Executive.  An appraisal of The Spirit Level should lead to an interesting discussion and I would urge as many people as possible to come and join in.
Best wishes,
Marguerite Finn

Resisting Austerity

Posted on | May 5, 2012 | No Comments

Friends’ Meeting House Upper Goat Lane7pm 31st May

Greece is at the cutting edge of austerity measures being introduced across Europe. While these
measures protect the interests of the rich, they just make matters worse for the majority of the
population. In Britain, the Coalition government is pursuing similar measures which
will see workers earning less and working longer for a smaller pension; plus the marketisation of
education and the dismantling of the NHS and other public services. In Norfolk, deep cuts in services,
benefits and jobs are hurting thousands of people. The Greek people have shown mass
resistance to such outrages – and we can learn from their response.
The report from Greece
PAUL MACKNEY
Former General Secretary of NATFHE/UCU union. Member of recent Greece Solidarity Campaign fact-finding
delegation to Athens by UK trades unions and campaigners, which visited many Greek anti-austerity organisations, parties,
unions and movements. Paul will report, with film evidence, on the appalling impact of the austerity programme in Greece, and
the variety of forms of organised resistance.
MARINA PRENTOULIS
Lecturer in politics at UEA, recently returned from Athens.
Organised with support from Norfolk Coalition Against the Cuts: http://norfolkcoalitionagainstcuts.org/
Greece Solidarity Campaign http://www.greecesolidarity.org/ Coalition of Resistance http://www.coalitionofresistance.org.uk/
Updated leaflets and info from: trevor@tpcampaigns.fsnet.co.uk

The report from Norfolk
A report on the worsening impact of government and council cuts in welfare and services on local people:
pensioners, the poor, the unemployed, the young, the disabled – and how to build resistance.
Speakers include representatives from local pensioners, youth and disabled people’s
organisations.
More groups welcome!
