Mayors for Peace
Did you now that that Norwich is a member City of Mayors for Peace?
Every year, we invite the Mayor of Norwich to officially ‘open’ the Peace Camp Event.
The aim of the Mayors for Peace is to contribute to the attainment of lasting world peace by arousing concern among citizens of the world for the total abolition of nuclear weapons through close solidarity among member cities as well as by striving to solve vital problems for the human race such as starvation and poverty, the plight of refugees, human rights abuses, and environmental degradation.
The Chapelfield Peace Tree (28/05/2022)
The Lord Mayor and Mayoress of Norwich dedicated a newly planted Olive Tree in Chapelfield Park on behalf of Mayors for Peace.
Norwich City joined the organisation in 2003 and Mayor Kevin Maguire gave a speech to a gathered crowd from Norwich peace activists. Also present were Committee members of the Norwich Peace Camp, and family members close to Shan Barclay, who was responsible for initiating the annual Peace Camp and commemorating the Olive Tree to Mayors for Peace.
The Mayor officially opens the annual Peace Camp to be held this year at the Forum on Saturday 8th October 2022.
