The war drums continue to beat for an attack on Iran, a country that does
not have nuclear weapons, while Israel, a country that does have a nuclear
stockpile, is the noisiest advocate of such an attack.
Most informed commentators agree that another war in this area would be
catastrophic but this does not mean that it will not happen. Despite the
risks, Israel seems determined to destroy Iran’s government and is
confident that the western powers will back any Israeli attack. BRITAIN
SHOULD MAKE IT CLEAR THAT IT WOULD NOT SUPPORT ANY SUCH MOVE.
The situation in Syria becomes ever more desperate and a natural response
is that something must be done. However the experiences of Iraq,
Afghanistan and Libya demonstrate that western intervention always makes
the situation worse, as these powers have their own agendas which do not
prioritize democracy and concern for the human rights of the Arab people.
Witness Cameron recently entertaining the Bahraini despot King Hamad to
tea and cakes in number 10, while a few days earlier a sixteen year old
democratic rights demonstrator had been shot and beaten to death by his
death squads.
The peoples of the Middle East and North Africa should be allowed to
decide their own governments without foreign intervention.
