IRAQ.
It is now around 10 years since the US and Britain went to war in the
disastrous attack on Iraq, allegedly for weapons of mass destruction that
were never found.
AFGHANISTAN.
The war and occupation in Afghanistan has lasted for an even longer
period, with none of the arguments for going to war – security, denying an
incubating space for terrorism, establishing women’s rights, exporting
democracy – having been realized.
NOW MALI
BUT still the West intervenes (disastrously) in the Middle East and
Africa, the latest being our support for the French in Mali.
MEANWHILE Obama continues each week to approve a kill-list of targets for
unmanned lethal drone attacks. Among the deaths from drones are an
estimated 176 children. Neither has he shut down Guantanamo Bay as he
promised.
So we are entitled to ask why, when the finance and resources in both
countries, could be spent in so many more worthy ways, do they persist in
engaging in such military adventures? In this meeting we shall explore the
real causes of these conflicts.
