Saturday 21st June, United Nations Association (UNA) are joining forces with Norwich CND to welcome Dr Rebecca Johnson to discuss the question “Can we scrap Trident and Ban Nuclear Weapons with a Global Treaty?”.

Press Release: A chance to hear, and to interview in Norwich, an important international figure;

The USA has its Noam Chomsky; we have our Rebecca Johnson. Chomsky is famous as a linguistic expert, but is also well known as a political activist and a leading critic of U.S. foreign policy, arrested on multiple occasions for his anti-war activism. Rebecca Johnson is an international expert and adviser on disarmament, with a number of important books and papers to her credit. She cut her teeth on the rigours of camping at Greenham Common in the 1980s.
Dr Johnson is coming to Norwich on Saturday 21st June, to lecture on “Can we scrap Trident and Ban Nuclear Weapons with a Global Treaty?” at 11am in the Curve at the Forum in central Norwich.
This is part of her national tour to publicise the critical time for disarmament internationally in view of the forthcoming Review Conference of the Parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 2015 and an international conference on the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons to be held in Austria later this year.
Britain signed the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT) in 1968 and agreed to negotiate “in good faith” the abolition of all nuclear weapons. However, the UK has consistently failed to implement seriously its disarmament obligations and still possesses over 200 nuclear warheads. It is inconsistent of the government to say that the UK is disarming while also planning to renew and replace its Trident weapons system in 2016, at the cost of £100bn.
Dr Rebecca Johnson will be available for interview in the Forum between 12.30 and 1pm on Saturday 21st June 2014.
