Norwich Peace Pillar and Peace Memorial. This is situated near to the bandstand in Chapelfield Park. The plaques beneath it state:

Given by Dr Sakuta on behalf of Japanese Peace Groups and accepted by Alan Driver Lord Mayor 1984. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 6th and 9th August 1945. Placed here on the 28th June in the presence of 3 Hibakashi.

Written on the pillar in four languages are the words:  May Peace Prevail on Earth

At a time when the city war memorial is being restored at considerable expense the Peace Memorial is in need of attention. The bombings commemorated by it epitomise above all how in modern warfare it is civilians who bear the brunt of casualties and of damage long and short term. Never before in history for example have there been more refugees. That human science, technology, wealth and ingenuity should be devoted to such ends is surely a travesty when there are far better things that we could be investing in.
