Martin Luther King Day April 4th

Posted on | April 6, 2013 | No Comments

Today marks the 45th anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of history’s greatest champions for peace and justice. Dr. King died working to bring about his vision of a just and peaceful world.

Killed in Memphis TN by an assassin’s bullet,

King was in the city to support striking Black sanitation workers who received considerably less pay than their White counterparts.

A year earlier to the day, Dr. King delivered his

Beyond Vietnam:

A Time to Break Silence speech at Riverside Church in New York City. Widely known in peace circles, but seldom mentioned elsewhere, he laid out clear moral and pragmatic reasons why he was against the war in Vietnam. He called on our nation to have a “radical revolution of values,” to “shift from a ‘thing-oriented’ society to a ‘person-oriented’ society.” He called on us to confront the evils of hate including racism and bigotry in all its forms, materialism and poverty, and militarism or war.

This was not King’s first time speaking out against the triple evils of hate, poverty and war. In his December 11, 1964 Nobel Peace Prize Lecture,

The Quest for Peace and Justice,

King explained his thinking on these plagues of humanity. He called war obsolete, because the awesome power of modern weapons, resulting in the killing of so many innocent people, eliminates the possibility that war can play a positive role in solving conflicts. He explained that, “We will not build a peaceful world by following a negative path. It is not enough to say ‘We must not wage war.’ It is necessary to love peace and sacrifice for it.” He advised us to not simply be against war, but, “on the positive affirmation of peace.”

In this 45th year after his death and the 50th year after his most famous

Posted on | April 1, 2013 | No Comments

Dear Friends,
It is time to advertise our next UNA LunchBox talk on Friday 19th April 2013 at 1pm in the Friends Meeting House, in Upper Goat Lane, Norwich.
This time we have a very unusual and interesting talk entitled: “Too wrinkly to reproduce: the Ethics of Older Motherhood”. Important matters of demographics,  ethics and women’s reproductive rights lie behind the jokey title – do come along and discuss them.
The talk is given by Dr Anna Smajdour from the UEA Medical School – whose biography is listed below and is well worth reading.

This year on April Fools’ Day, we will be going to Aldermaston to highlight our opposition to Britain’s Trident nuclear weapons system – because that’s where the nuclear bombs are made. We’ll be saying Scrap Trident and cancel plans to replace it. We’ll be gathering around the base in our thousands with music, colour, and speeches.

Saturday 23rd March 2013 – 20:00 til 22:00

Saturday 23rd March at 8.30pm is designated as global Earth Hour – uniting people to protect the planet.

Earth Hour asks everyone to take personal accountability for their impact on the planet and make behavioural changes to facilitate a sustainable lifestyle. Taking the first step is as easy as turning off your lights. By switching off your lights for Earth Hour you are acknowledging and celebrating your commitment to do something more for the planet that goes beyond the hour.

Switch off all the lights at home and come and celebrate outside The Forum where you will be entertained by fire artists, jugglers, poi performers, entertainers, musicians, fire walkers and plenty of organisations offering information about Earth Hour and how you can get involved in making a difference.

Sustainability in the Post Austerity Age

by Prof. Tim O’Riordan, OBE (UEA & Soil Association)

Sustainable localism; community-led politics and economics; a three-day working week. These seem off-the-wall now, but they won’t by 2020, let alone 2030. In such a scenario, organics and permaculture would have a huge role to play, as would changing diets to more “meatlessness” and locally produced food. 7.30pm Monday 25 March
