Aboriginal Australia

Posted on | November 10, 2013 | No Comments

Dear Friends,
The time has come to let you know about the next LunchBox talk which will take place on Friday 15th November at the Friends Meeting House in Upper Goat Lane, Norwich. The talk will be at 1pm and will last about 30 minutes followed by questions.
This is the last LunchBox talk in 2013. The next talk will be on Friday 17th January 2014 in the Friends Meeting House.
This month – on Friday 15th November – the talk will be given by Mrs Frances Middleton. She will talk about Aboriginal Australia, following her visit to Australia.
This is an unusual topic and promises to be very interesting.  This is the second illustrated talk given by Mrs Middleton this year and follows her talk in June on Dragons and Dreams in Vietnam with TraidCraft which was very well received.
Please do try and attend this talk on Friday 15 November. I have attached a poster in Word and PDF and I would be grateful if you could advertise the talk if possible.
Thanks you – and hope to see you on the Friday 15th November.
Best wishes, Margueritte Vice Chair UNA Norwich & District

Dear Friends,

We had a great start to 2013 Norfolk Black History Month. We already had a great launch at Norwich City Council, African Market at Castle Mall in Norwich which starts on Tuesday and runs until October 27.

Throughout the month there will be a variety of music and drama events across Norfolk, including at Café Marzano at the Forum in Norwich which will include on 12th October Blonde on Black at Café Marzano, a sophisticated chanteuse Chrissie D. and her trio reprise the songs of Ella, Billie, Sarah, Nat and many more of the great black heroes of jazz accompanied by a fantastic Afro Caribbean soul food buffet supper.

The BHM Arts and Literature Festival feature lectures and discussions, and on October 11 at the Forum there is an evening of performance, laughter and brisk word-play with Caribbean poets John Agard, who holds the Queen’s Medal for Poetry, and Jean “Binta” Breeze, who was made an MBE for services to literature.

The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts will host a family festival on October 13. A lecture and exhibition series includes a High Wind in Jamaica exhibition at Café Marzano by artist Danny Keen, and a lecture on Tuesday, October 1 at the Millennium Library in the Forum about the 150th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation

A quick highlight for your dairy over the next 7 days. Please check the website for a full detail www.norfolkblackhistorymonth.org.uk   Read more

David Roberts Memorial Lecture

Posted on | October 11, 2013 | No Comments

Dear Friends,
This is to remind you of the second annual David Roberts Memorial Lecture which will be held in The Curve at the Forum on Saturday 19th October 2013.
The talk will be entitled : “Our Population Predicament Has Five Fathers – – – – ” and will be given by Eric Rimmer from the organisation Population Matters.
Eric Rimmer FCIPD spent many years working with multinational corporations in human-resource management roles. He has also worked on independent consulting with international companies on both sides of the Atlantic.  Since 2003, as a member of www.populationmatters.org he has devoted increasing time to campaigning for the stabilization and reduction of human population.
Human population is a contentious subject and is usually the elephant in the room that nobody wants to talk about. Yet with the increasing global population and the earth’s finite resources it is a topic urgently waiting to be discussed. Eric Rimmer is a good speaker who is very experienced on this topic which needs to be explored and considered.
The talk will follow the usual format where the speaker will talk for approximately 30 minutes followed by questions and answers for another 30 minutes. Do come along and let us have your views. The talk starts at 11am. Tea/ coffee available from 10.30am.  Please do try to come to this important talk.
best wishes,
Marguerite

End the War on Terror

Posted on | October 5, 2013 | No Comments

Monday 7th October marks the beginning of  ‘Operation Enduring Freedom’ which was supposed to liberate Afghanistan

it has endured longer than WWl and WWll put together and brought no freedom
Quite the opposite it has brought death, destruction, misery and poverty to millions of Afghans, millions of whom are also refugess, even in their own country.

It has also resulted in many US and British servicemen’s deaths and injury

and achieved nothing good whatsoever at an astronomical price as well

All around the world people are calling for an end to this unjust war and all the wars enacted in the name of the War on terror

on this day please spare a thought for the Afghanis who were drawn into this through no fault of their own
