Unusual maybe significant event

this also coincides with beginning of Islamic month of Rabbi al Awwal third month of 1435 A H After Hijrah

the time of the emigration of the Muslim community to al Madinah from persecution in Makkah

Surely our world has never been in greater need of peace, justice and healing

time surely for the warmongers to alter their ways also

Bethlehem

Posted on | December 22, 2013 | No Comments

At this time when many here are turning in their thoughts to Bethlehem and the land around it and the events associated with the birth of Jesus son of Mary the Messiah peace be upon him

it is saluatry that the community there which traditionally has embraced Christian and Muslim alike out of respect for the the sanctity of the site to people of both these religions is now divided by the apartheid wall, both communities suffering as a result.

Much however is being done to address this sad situation and to resist the illegal occupation which has brought this about in non-violent and constructive ways

One organisation which has been positively involved in this for many years is Holy Land Trust which can be found at:

“50 Years of Rachel Carson’s ‘Silent Spring'”

Posted on | December 21, 2013 | No Comments

Dear Friends,
I would like to wish you a very Happy Christmas and a bright and healthy New Year. I would also like to tell you about our first talk in 2014 which takes place on Friday 17th January 2014 at 1pm in the Friends Meeting House in Upper Goat Lane, Norwich.
This time we have got an unusual and interesting talk : Dr Rebecca Tillett and Mr Nick Selby will be talking about “50 Years of Rachel Carson’s ‘Silent Spring'” at 1pm in the Friends Meeting House. Dr Tillett’s research focuses on twentieth and twenty-first century multiethnic American Literature and film with particular emphases on contemporary American writers and upon postcolonial theory. She is particularly interested in the ways in which Native writers use literature as a means by which to engage in otherwise political dialogues with national, local and corporate bodies.

Certainly, Rachel Carson’s ground-breaking book “Silent Spring” brought the subject of the detrimental effects of pesticides on the environment – particularly on birds- into the public domain. Recently,’ Silent Spring’ was named one of the 25 greatest science books of all time by the editors of ‘Discover Magazine’. But it was not without controversy.

Come along to the talk and find out why.   Please display the attached poster if you can.

best wishes,

Marguerite Finn

Nelson Mandela - by David Turnley

Nelson Mandela’s long but ultimately successful struggle to liberate South Africa’s oppressed black majority made and still makes him a figure of hope and inspiration for millions of people around the world especially the oppressed.

In 1963, already behind bars and facing the death penalty during a sabotage trial, Mr Mandela gave his famous “speech from the dock”.

The words – combative, but measured and full of hope – signalled the emergence of the statesman who would become a luminary of the 20th century.

He said: “I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination.

“I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities.

“It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

The apartheid government jailed Mr Mandela and his comrades for life in 1964 but they could not lock away the ideas he embodied and the righteousness of his cause.

To allies of South Africa’s racist regime – including some in Britain – Mr Mandela remained for many years a “terrorist”.

But for campaigners Mr Mandela’s 27-year ordeal behind bars, often in a cramped cell on Robben Island or in solitary confinement, represented all that was wrong with apartheid. Read more
