Peace One Day

Posted on | September 17, 2015 | No Comments

Monday, September 21
United Nations International Day of Peace

Theme: Who will you make peace with?

Norwich Quakers and others affiliated to Norwich Peace Camp invite all to join them in marking this annual day of peacemaking and hope for peace on earth.
1 – 2pm SILENT VIGIL
at the bottom of Hay Hill by Norwich Market
with Banners, Information Stall and Leafleting

The aim of Peace One Day is to start with just one day in the year when there is no war or violence anywhere in the world. People can use that day to think how the causes of war can be eradicated and how conflicts can be solved without violence. Then, one day at a time, we can all begin building a world without war for every day.

There have been tangible results from what has happened on previous September 21sts. Ceasefires have enabled food drops in famine areas of Africa and vaccination against polio for children across Afghanistan. There have been themed sporting events and celebrations around the world. The 2012 Peace One Day Report found that approximately 280 million people in 198 countries were aware of Peace Day 2012 – 4% of the world’s population. In 2014 more than one billion people were exposed to Peace Day messages through activities ranging from concerts to prayer groups. Across the world 610 million people were aware of Peace Day, with a major increase in Africa, particularly the Great Lakes region, where there will be a large Peace One Day Celebration in Kigali this year. “The Complexity of the International Food Trade Network.”

Posted on | September 13, 2015 | No Comments

Professor Baranyi’s talk will be in the Friends Meeting House, Upper Goat Lane, Norwich NR2 1EW. The talk will be at 1pm on Friday 18th September 2015.

Dear Friends,

Our Speaker for September is Professor Jozef Baranyi from the Institute of Food Research in Norwich.
He joined the Institute of Food Research in 1990. As an internationally renowned bacteriologist, Professor Baranyi is well-placed to tell us of the problems that lie in preventing food poisoning outbreaks in a world food trading system probably designed more for profit than for health. He will have suggestions to make about how the UN can help to reorganise the food trade on a safer and more secure basis.

The title of Professor Baranyi’s talk is : “The Complexity of the International Food Trade Network.”

With demand for food to increase by 50% by 2030, the current global food distribution system compromises food tracebility, which has an impact on its chemical and microbiological safety. Read more

FILM: ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD
FRIDAY 11TH SEPTEMBER 7Pm
CHARING CROSS CENTRE
19 ST. JOHN MADDERMARKET
NORWICH NR2 1DN

Admission free, voluntary collection

The public showing will be followed by a question and answer session with the producer, Lia Tarachansky.

When the Israeli government tried to silence history, a light was shed on the nation’s biggest taboo. This is the story of those who tried to erase Palestine, creating an Israeli landscape of denial.

Former West Bank settler Lia Tarachansky looks at Israelis’ collective amnesia of the fateful events of 1948 when the state of Israel was born and most of the Palestinians became refugees.

As a former Israelii settler, Lia was able to obtain interviews with settlers that would, in all probability, be denied to Palestinian film makers.
This is an excellent opportunity to see a unique film and to question the film producer

Secretly and against the will of Parliament, Britain has been involved in bombing Syria. It is clear that the government’s aim is to step up the bombing attack.
