EVENTS FOR ISRAELI APARTHEID WEEK at THE UNIVERSITY OF EAST ANGLIA 2015.

Posted on | February 23, 2015 | No Comments

The 2015 IAW at UEA will join the international solidarity movement, and take place during the week of the 23rd to the 27th of February, at the same time as other UK Universities. There will be a stall in the Hive throughout the week with various resources, and information for those who would like to find out more and join the activities.

Tuesday 24: (7:00 pm – Congregation hall 0.17) Film Screening “5 Broken Cameras” (2011) Directors: Palestinan Emad Burnat and Israeli Guy Davidi
The International Award winning documentary film is a personal account of the conflict by Palestinian Emad Burnet. Burnet documents his West Bank village of Bil’in’s resistance to the encroachment of Israeli settlements. Burnet began recording the film with his first camera in 2005, filming the violent raids of the Israeli Army, and over the course of 5 years each of his camera’s is shot and smashed by these authorities.

Wednesday 25: (7:00 pm- JSC 1.02) Mark Zeitoun Lecture: “Roots and Future of the Jordan River Conflict”
Abstract: Sustainable management of international transboundary waters requires effective international cooperation, based on common goals and fair water-sharing principles. The situation is perhaps most critical in the Middle East, where recent developments on the Tigris and Nile Rivers are cause for both hope and concern. The most heavily securitized river basin in the world – the Jordan Basin – is scrutinized within this context. At the root of tensions is the extremely asymmetric use of the Jordan flows by Israel, and the impact this has on Palestinian and Lebanese development efforts.
Mark Zeitoun is author of Power and Water in the Middle East: The hidden politics of the Palestinian – Israeli Water Conflict, and a Reader with the UEA Water Security Research Centre at the School of International Development (http://www.uea.ac.uk/watersecurity).

Thursday 26: Film Screening (7:00 pm – Congregation hall 1.21) “Omar” (2013) Director: Hany Abu-Assad
The award winning and Oscar nominated drama-thriller film tells the story of a young Palestinian freedom fighter who agrees to work as an informant after he’s tricked into an admission of guilt by association in the wake of an Israeli soldier’s killing.

Street Child

Posted on | February 4, 2015 | No Comments

Dear Friends,

I would like to tell you about the forthcoming LunchBox talk on Friday 20th February at 1pm in the Friends Meeting House, Upper Goat Lane, Norwich.  Tom Dannatt will be talking to us about Street Child, the Charity he founded to work in West Africa.

Street Child is a UK charity established in 2008 with the aim of creating educational opportunity for some of the most vulnerable children in Sierra Leone.  Street Child’s principal focus is upon empowering children by giving them the chance to go to school and giving their families the wherewithal to keep them there.

Tom founded Street Child and leads the organisation on a day-to-day basis. He is ultimately responsible for all aspects of the organisation’s performance – the project work in Sierra Leone, fund-raising and charity administration.  He travels to Sierra Leone regularly. Tom holds a MSc in Human Rights and is also a qualified barrister.  At the present time, Street Child is working very hard to look after children who have lost their parents through the Ebola virus.   Please display the attached poster if you can and do come and hear this very interesting talk

best wishes,

Marguerite

“Cley Marshes – a wild vision.”

Posted on | January 7, 2015 | No Comments

Dear Friends
A happy and peaceful New Year to everyone. It is time again to let you know about our January LunchBox talk which will take place in the Friends Meeting House in Upper Goat Lane, Norwich on Friday 16th January 2015 at 1pm.
The talk will be given by David North – Head of people and Wildlife at the Norfolk Wildlife Trust.  David will talk about “Cley Marshes – a wild vision.”
Cley Marshes is Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s (NWT) oldest and best known nature reserve.  It was purchased in 1926 to be held “in perpetuity as a bird breeding sanctuary” .  It provided a blue print for nature conservation which has now been replicated across the UK.  The water levels in the pools and reedbeds are regulated to ensure they are ideal for the resident birds and reed is harvested every year to keep the reedbeds in good condition.
This should be a fascinating talk covering a vision for the future of the marshes and I hope you will all be able to come.
with best wishes,
Marguerite
