World Religion Day

Posted on | January 1, 2015 | No Comments

Dear All,

Forthcoming World Religion Day event in Norwich on Sunday January 18th.

Last year’s event was very enthusiastically appreciated by those who attended and there was a shared resolution to repeat it again this year.

We hope that you will share this invitation with friends and help us to build on the success of last year’s event.

Last year saw a wonderful mix of believers from different religious and cultural backgrounds, and also a wide range of participants of different ages from 6 years to 60 years plus!

The world continues to suffer from experiences of extremism in so many ways , that efforts to promote understanding and celebrate difference, such as this, however small, offer some rays of much needed hope.

Best wishes,

Bridget Macdonald
and on behalf of

“The Ebola Virus”

Posted on | December 1, 2014 | No Comments

Dear Friends,
This is to bring you news of our December LunchBox talk.  We do not usually have a LunchBox this near to Christmas but we feel that Ebola is important enough to do so.
We are very fortunate in having Dr Samir Dervisevic, Consultant Virologist at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital come and talk to us at 1pm on Friday 19th December at the Friends Meeting House in Upper Goat Lane, Norwich.  The title of his talk is “The Ebola Virus”.
We know relatively little about this appalling disease – so here are some points to ponder:
  • What is Ebola?
  • What does it mean?
  • Is it a challenge for medicine?
  • Or Nature striking back at overpopulation?
  • Or bad luck?
  • Or inequality?
  • Or a consequence of colonialism?
  • Or the heart of darkness?
  • Or evolution?
  • Or divine retribution?
  • What are we doing about it?
If you are interested in any of these questions, do please come to the talk on Friday 19th December at the Friends Meeting House in Upper Goat Lane, Norwich. The talk will start at 1pm. The speaker will talk for 30 minutes, followed by questions. Tea,  coffee and biscuits will be available from 12.30.   Hope to see you there.

“Global politics: God, sex and violence”

Posted on | October 28, 2014 | No Comments

Dear Friends,

This is notification of the 3rd David Roberts Memorial Lecture in the Curve at the Forum on Saturday 22nd November at 11am.  This talk will be given by Professor Lee Marsden who is Professor of International Relations in the School of Political, Social and International Relations at UEA.   The title of the talk will be: “Global politics: God, sex and violence”.

It is vital we challenge secularists to engage with religious actors, the religious to take responsibility for what is done in their name, and for both to adhere to The Golden Rule. This talk is a whistle stop tour of the relationship between religion and politics in today’s complex world.  Based on current research into religion and security, the talk promises to be controversial and thought provoking. Do try to come. The talk starts at 11am followed by questions. Tea and coffee will be served from 10.30am.

Where Should The Birds Fly

Posted on | October 22, 2014 | No Comments

clip_image002

The Israeli- Palestine conflict is normally presented in the western media through Israeli eyes, while Palestinian spokespeople are largely absent. Next Monday 27th October, 7pm, at the Forum in The Curve, Millennium Plain, Central Norwich there will be a free showing of the first film about Gaza made by Palestinians living the reality of Israel’s siege and blockade of this tiny enclave.

Where Should The Birds Fly is the story of two young women, survivors of Israel’s Operation Cast Lead – the horrific Israeli invasion and bombardment of Gaza in December 2008 and January 2009. Mona Samouni, now 12 years old and the filmmaker, Fida Qishta, now 27, represent the spirit and future of Palestinians.

The film is a visual documentation of the Goldstone Report, the result of the fact finding team set-up by the United Nations. But it is so much more.  It reveals the strength and hope, the humanity and humour that flourishes among the people of Gaza. Few films document so powerfully and personally the impact of modern warfare and sanctions on a civilian population.

All are welcome to attend. Admission is free. There will be a voluntary collection, the proceeds of which will go to assist the film-maker with the production costs of the film.
