IRAQ.
It is now around 10 years since the US and Britain went to war in the
disastrous attack on Iraq, allegedly for weapons of mass destruction that
were never found.

AFGHANISTAN.
The war and occupation in Afghanistan has lasted for an even longer
period, with none of the arguments for going to war – security, denying an
incubating space for terrorism, establishing women’s rights, exporting
democracy – having  been realized. Read more

Wrongful detention and imprisonment of children

Posted on | December 22, 2012 | No Comments

The wrongful arrest and detention of Palestinian children has a long history and is contrary to all UN, EU, UK and international law and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

All children as we all know are protected by law and this right cannot and should not be taken away from them.

There is an online petition about this which you can visit and sign if you wish at:

MONDAY 10TH DECEMBER 2012 VIGIL FOR AFGHANISTAN

Stop the War Naming the Dead event in Trafalgar Square 7.10.12: soldiers’ families and MPs say bring troops home by Christmas

———————————————————-

This Monday 10th December 2012 – Human Rights Day – peace and human rights activists in the Norwich area will be holding a vigil calling for a ceasefire in Afghanistan and remembering the 2 million Afghans who have died in the last 32 years of war. This event will be part of an initiative from the Afghan Peace Volunteers – Kabul .

The current 11-year war has seen tens of thousands of Afghans and hundreds of UK soldiers killed – and continuing to die – in a futile and unjustified war.

Paddy Ashdown, in the first such statement by a senior British politician, joined Stop the War Coalition and anti-war activists in calling for all British troops to come home immediately. While the UK government is committed to a timetable of withdrawing most of Britain ‘s 9,000 troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014, Lord Ashdown said the only rational policy was to leave quickly.  He warned that the only outcome of staying longer was more deaths for no purpose, highlighting the increasing number of Nato troops being killed by those wearing Afghan army or police uniform.

We shall be assembling at the Haymarket, Norwich on Monday 10th December 5pm till 6.30pm. You are welcome to join us.

UNA LunchBox talk

Posted on | December 2, 2012 | No Comments

Dear Friends,
Christmas is coming – but before that we have the UNA LunchBox talk on Friday 21st December. It will be held at 1pm in the Friends Meeting House in Upper Goat Lane,  Norwich.  The talk will be entitled “Tools for Life” and will be given by Mr & Mrs Evans-Jones. They will also show a short film.  “Tools for Life” is the slogan for “Work Aid” ( www.workaid.org ). The organisation “Workaid” is committed to tackling poverty in a practical way by helping disadvantaged people overseas and in the UK, to help themselves through practical skills training.  Unwanted tools and equipment are collected from all over the UK and refurbished by a team of dedicated volunteers at the Workaid workshop. The refurbished tools are then sent to vocational training projects where they help vulnerable and disadvantaged people to learn trade skills and start their oen businesses. Each year Workaid helps over 9,000 people to break the cycle of poverty and rebuild their lives. There are currently successful projects running in the UK, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia and Tanzania.
Tea/coffee (and maybe a mince-pie) will be available from 12.15 onwards, the talk starts at 1pm and will be followed by questions and discussion until 1.50pm.
It will provide respite from Christmas shopping and I hope to see you all there.

This could be the first step after the declaration of a truce and ceasfire for Gaza to re-initiate  negotiations on the basis of full recognition of the rights of Palestine and all Palestinians and bring peace to Jerusalem and all the land around it for all people who wish to live there in peace as well.
